What does a small business website need to be found by Google and ChatGPT?
A small business website needs to let search and AI crawlers in, list its pages in a sitemap, describe the business in structured data, and answer buyers’ questions in plain text on the page. It should also be verified in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, which are free. None of this guarantees a ranking or a citation; it removes the reasons a site gets skipped.
Google says there are no special requirements to appear in its AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond ordinary search basics. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity use their own crawlers, which you allow or block by name in robots.txt. The work is mostly small files and clear pages, done once and then checked over time.
How it works
Let the right crawlers in with robots.txt
Each company separates search from training. OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and GPTBot for model training; Anthropic uses Claude-SearchBot for search and ClaudeBot for training; PerplexityBot surfaces sites in Perplexity and, Perplexity says, is not used for training; Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding and does not affect Google Search. Allow the search crawlers you want to appear in, and decide on the training ones separately.
Publish a sitemap
A sitemap.xml lists the pages you want found; point to it from robots.txt and submit it in Google and Bing. Google says a well-linked site of about 500 pages or fewer may not need one, and that a sitemap helps discovery but does not guarantee indexing.
Verify the site with Google and Bing
Google Search Console shows whether Google can crawl and index your pages and which searches show them. Bing Webmaster Tools does the same for Bing, and its AI Performance report shows how your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and some partner services.
Describe the business in structured data
Add JSON-LD, the format Google recommends, for the organization, the local business and its services, so machines read your name, address and offer without guessing. Add Open Graph tags so shared links show the right title and image. An llms.txt file, a proposed plain-text summary with links for AI tools, is optional and cheap to add.
Write pages that answer buyers’ questions
One page per service, saying what it is, who it is for, where you work, how to book and what happens next, in plain sentences near the top. An answer engine can only quote what is written on the page.
Measure by asking the same questions
Write down five or ten questions a buyer would ask, such as "physiotherapy clinic in Boa Viagem that takes insurance". Ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity every few weeks and note whether and how the business appears. Read Search Console and Bing reports alongside.
What it costs to run
The tools below are free on the official pages. Domain, hosting and the time to write the pages are separate and depend on your provider and your site.

What we learned building it
From a check of Betterlane’s own website (betterlaneagency.com and betterlane.com.br) on 28 Sep 2026. Not a client site.
- The three basic files were missing
- robots.txt, sitemap.xml and llms.txt all returned 404 on both domains. A missing robots.txt does not block Google, which treats a 404 as no restrictions, but it also points no crawler to a sitemap.
- Nothing described the business to machines
- The pages had no JSON-LD structured data and no Open Graph tags, so search engines and shared links had to guess the name, the offer and the image.
- Neither Google nor Bing had been told the site exists
- Neither domain was verified in Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools, so there was no report to read and no sitemap submitted.
- The language setup was already right
- Canonical tags and hreflang links between the English and Portuguese domains were in place. We are adding the missing pieces now and will track the same questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity over the coming weeks.
When it is not worth it
- Be wary of any package that promises AI citations or a ranking: nobody controls those, and Google says no special optimization is needed for its AI features.
- If the pages do not say plainly what you do, where and for whom, the files and markup have nothing to point at. Fix the pages first.
- If almost all your customers come from referrals and repeat visits, the basics above are enough; a larger search project may not pay back.
Questions
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It is optional. llmstxt.org describes it as a proposal, not a standard, and it is used most for software documentation. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode (Google Search Central, AI features and your website, read 28 Sep 2026).
Should I block AI crawlers?
Decide search and training separately. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, while blocking GPTBot only signals that content should not be used for training (OpenAI, Overview of OpenAI Crawlers, read 28 Sep 2026). Google says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search.
Why bother with Bing if my customers use Google?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes sends queries to partner search providers and lists Microsoft among them (OpenAI Help Center, Searching the web with ChatGPT, read 28 Sep 2026). Bing’s AI Performance report is also a free way to see citations in Copilot and some partner services.
Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No. You can make the site readable and the answers clear, then check over time. Anyone promising a citation or a position is promising something they do not control.
