Betterlane vs SmadiDesk: an alternative for UK dental practices
SmadiDesk answers the practice’s calls after hours or when the line is busy: it learns the practice from its website, takes appointment requests for the team to confirm, flags emergencies and sends a morning summary. You set it up yourself, and its prices are published.
Betterlane answers written messages instead, on the practice’s own WhatsApp and website, and where a booking link or connected calendar exists it offers a time rather than only taking a request. SmadiDesk flags emergencies to the team; Betterlane passes anything clinical to the team with a summary. SmadiDesk says some of its providers process data outside the UK; Betterlane’s assistant runs on Vercel and Neon in São Paulo, Brazil.
Test it before you pay
The first flow is built free in ten days, against a scope and tests we agree with you before we start. If it does not pass them, you pay nothing and keep it.
Betterlane and SmadiDesk side by side
| Betterlane | SmadiDesk | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An agency: we build and run the assistant for the practice | “AI that feels human, answers calls, takes appointment requests, and captures lead details — 24/7” |
| Who sets it up and changes it | Betterlane builds and changes it; the practice approves the answers and the rules | You do: paste your website address and it learns your services; assisted setup by a UK dental IT partner costs £250 |
| Channels | WhatsApp on the practice’s own number and a chat on its website; no phone calls | Phone calls forwarded from your line, after hours or when busy; SMS alerts to your team; no WhatsApp or web chat |
| What it answers from | The facts the practice approves (treatments, published fees, hours, how to register), agreed before we build; anything outside them goes to the team with a summary | Your website and any documents you upload |
| Booking | Through the practice’s online booking link or a connected calendar; otherwise it records the request for reception to confirm. It does not book inside practice software it is not connected to | Takes appointment requests for your team to confirm; Dentally “coming soon” |
| Clinical questions | Gives no clinical advice: pain, swelling or a reaction after treatment goes to the team with a summary, and the patient is told how to get urgent care | Flags emergencies (pain, swelling, trauma) to your team; its terms say it “is not a substitute for qualified dental or medical advice” |
| WhatsApp number and Meta’s fees | The practice’s own number and Meta account, through Meta’s Cloud API; Meta’s fees are billed on the practice’s own account | No WhatsApp |
| How it is priced | The first flow is built free in ten days, against a scope and tests agreed before we start; if it does not do what was scoped, the practice pays nothing and keeps it. Running it after that is agreed before we start. | Published: after hours from £149 a month, 24/7 overflow from £199 a month, exclusive of VAT, no contract |
When each one is the better choice
- SmadiDesk when you want phone cover after hours or when the line is busy, set up yourself from your website, with emergencies flagged to your team, your team booking the appointments, and published prices from £149 a month.
- Betterlane when patients message rather than call, and you want the assistant built and kept up for you on your own WhatsApp number and website, offering times from your booking link or calendar.

What we measured ourselves (not client work)
Our own desk count, without contacting anyone: the websites of 30 private dental practices, five in each of London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol and Glasgow, read on 5 October 2026. No practice is named.
- 27 of the 30 showed nothing that answers out of hours; one showed a chatbot and two were unclear. This records what the websites show, not how fast anyone answers: we did not test response times.
Questions
Does SmadiDesk book into the diary?
Its own site describes appointment requests for your team to confirm, with a Dentally integration “coming soon”. Betterlane books through your booking link or a connected calendar, or records the request.
Which is quicker to start?
SmadiDesk: you paste your website and it sets itself up. Betterlane builds the first flow in ten days.
Where is the data processed?
SmadiDesk says some of its providers process data outside the UK, with safeguards. Betterlane’s assistant runs on Vercel and Neon in São Paulo, Brazil, and reaches its model provider through Vercel’s AI Gateway. Ask both for a data processing agreement and the full list of processors.
