Betterlane vs respond.io: an alternative to respond.io for clinics that want the assistant built for them
respond.io is software the clinic’s team subscribes to and sets up. Betterlane builds and runs the assistant for the clinic: it answers only from the clinic’s approved facts, checks the calendar before offering a time, and hands anything clinical or unusual to reception with a summary. Choose respond.io when several people answer messages from one shared inbox and your team wants to build its own flows and AI agents.
Either way, Meta charges for WhatsApp messages separately, and the number and the Meta business account should stay in the clinic’s name.
Betterlane and respond.io side by side
| Betterlane | respond.io | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An agency: we build and run the assistant for the business | Subscription software, priced by monthly active contacts, with users, bots and AI agents |
| Who builds and changes it | Betterlane builds and changes it; the business approves the answers and the rules | Your team, in the software |
| What it answers from | Only the business’s approved facts; anything outside them goes to a person with a summary | AI agents from the Growth plan, set up by your team |
| Booking | Checks the calendar before offering a time and confirms it, or only records the request | Not listed on its pricing page |
| WhatsApp number | The business’s own WhatsApp number and Meta account, through Meta’s official Cloud API | Connects your WhatsApp; "WhatsApp fees are not included in any respond.io subscription" |
| How it is priced | The first flow is built free in ten days; if it does not do what was scoped, the business pays nothing. Running it after that is agreed before we start. | Starter US$79/month (monthly billing), 5 users; Growth, with AI agents, US$159/month |
| Where it runs | On Betterlane’s server; the business keeps its number, Meta account, calendar and facts | In respond.io’s software |
When each one is the better choice
- respond.io when several people answer messages from one shared inbox and your team wants to build its own flows and AI agents.
- Betterlane when nobody on the team has time to build flows, answers must come only from the clinic’s facts, bookings must check the real calendar, and sensitive questions must go to reception.
What respond.io and Meta state
From respond.io’s own page, read on 30 September 2026, in US dollars, and Meta’s rate card. Betterlane publishes no price: the first flow is built free, and running it afterwards is agreed before we start.

What we ran into on our own demo clinic
From Betterlane’s own fictional demo clinic on a Meta test number, September 2026. Not a client system.
- The webhook was verified but nothing arrived until the business account was subscribed to our app, not only to Meta’s sample app. A tool hides that step; a built assistant has to get it right once.
Questions
Is Betterlane a respond.io alternative?
For a clinic that wants the assistant built and run for it, rather than software to set up, yes. For a team that wants one inbox and to build its own flows, respond.io is the better fit.
Can a clinic use both?
Often, yes: the assistant answers first and hands the conversation to wherever reception already works. Check that the inbox accepts conversations from outside before choosing.
Who owns the WhatsApp number?
The clinic, in both cases: the number sits in the clinic’s Meta business account.
