Betterlane vs Wakeman for home-service contractors

Updated Oct 31, 2026

Wakeman and Betterlane both answer a trade shop’s calls in its name and put safety first. The difference is who shapes it and what you risk. Wakeman is software you switch on in about ten minutes from your Google listing and website, or set up with their help, free for plumbing, HVAC and electrical, in return for a check-in, permission to share totals and a named write-up if it works. Betterlane builds the assistant around your own questions, wording, services and towns, runs it and changes it for you, and builds the first flow free in ten days: if it does not do what was scoped, you pay nothing and keep it.

Choose Wakeman if you want a published price from $49 a month, booking into Jobber, a caller put through to your team, or your on-call phone rung during an emergency call: our phone assistant does none of those today. It takes the job, the address, how soon and a callback number, reads them back and texts your team a summary of every call, and the same team can build the office automations behind it.

Test it before you pay

The first flow is built free in ten days, against a scope and tests we agree with you before we start. If it does not pass them, you pay nothing and keep it: it runs free for 30 more days while we fix it or you decide, then it is either paid monthly or switched off with your facts, answers and setup notes handed over.

After you say yes

  1. Day 1 starts when your intake is back and the booking step is checked. If that slips, the date moves and we tell you the same day.

  2. On day 9 we go through the agreed scope with you, line by line, on a 15-minute video call. A line that fails is fixed and checked again.

  3. If it does not do what we agreed by day 10, it keeps running free for 30 days while we fix it or you decide. Then either you pay monthly, only if it now does what was agreed, or it is switched off and we hand over what is yours: the approved facts, the answers, the booking rules and a setup note any builder can follow. Nothing is invoiced for any of it.

  4. Payment starts only if it does what was agreed and you choose to keep it running: monthly from day 11, at an amount you know before day 1. Month to month: if you stop, it is switched off.

  5. The monthly covers hosting and usage; us reading the conversations and fixing wrong answers and bugs; changes to your hours, services and staff within 2 business days; help by email or WhatsApp within 1 business day, the same day if something is broken (business days are Monday to Friday, Dubai time, and planned absences are told to you in advance); and a short note each month. Meta’s WhatsApp fees, if any, are billed on your own Meta account.

Check it yourself

The assistant’s code is covered by 72 automated tests, which run before any change goes live; all 72 passed on 7 Oct 2026.

Where the data goes, in short: the assistant and its database run in the region closest to your customers (São Paulo for the Americas; London or Frankfurt for the UK, Europe or the Gulf, set up before day 1); replies are written by OpenAI’s model through Vercel’s AI Gateway with zero data retention, in US data centres, or EU ones for Europe; we do not publish a standard data processing agreement yet. If your customers’ data has to stay in one country, check this before anything else.

When each one is the better choice

  • Betterlane when you want the assistant built around your own questions and wording rather than read off your listing, run and changed for you without trading a write-up for setup, tested free on your own scope and kept if it fails, with one partner for the phone and the office work behind it.
  • Wakeman when you want to switch it on yourself today at a published price, need bookings in Jobber, want callers put through to your team, or want your on-call phone rung during an emergency.

What Wakeman states

As published on Wakeman’s own pricing page, read 31 Oct 2026; tax extra. Betterlane publishes no price: the first flow is built free, and what running it costs is agreed before we start.

Questions

Is Betterlane an alternative to Wakeman?

Yes, for a shop that wants the assistant built around its own calls and run for it, with nothing to set up or maintain on its side. If you need Jobber booking, live transfer or your on-call phone rung during the call, Wakeman does those and we do not.

What does Betterlane do in an emergency call?

Safety words first for a gas smell, sparks, flooding, carbon monoxide or a fall, then the call reaches your team as a text with the address and a callback number. It does not ring your on-call phone during the call.

Can I hear it before talking to anyone?

Yes. Type your website at betterlaneagency.com/hear and, in about a minute, you can call a free demo built from it in your browser. It is not connected to your phone.
